Some Scriptural Thoughts About Cinco de Mayo
Fri., May. 5. 2017 2:00pm EDT
Happy Cinco de Mayo! Most of us probably think Mexicans regard the Fifth of May the same way Americans regard the Fourth of July. But Mexico's Independence Day is actually September 16.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The French army had twice as many troops as the Mexicans and hadn't been defeated in almost 50 years. Since that battle, no country in the Americas has been invaded by any other European military force.
With 5/5 in mind, Iet's take a look at some of the 5:5 verses in the Bible. This 5:5 commemorates another monumental victory — Christ's victory over sin and death:
Revelation 5:5
Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."
Because Jesus won that battle, we are no longer subject to the enemy forces that once ruled over us:
1 Thessalonians 5:5
You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
By believing in Jesus, we have overcome not just another country but the whole world:
1 John 5:5
Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
And we not only overcome the world, we inherit the earth!
Matthew 5:5
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Now if all that doesn't make you feel like celebrating, what will?
