This Past Weekend in KY & OH
Mon., Dec. 5. 2005 10:55pm EST
Oh, sure ... last weekend's schedule read Friday in Louisville KY, Saturday in Ft. Knox KY, and Sunday in Columbus OH. But it felt more like the twilight zone.
Not because of the people, mind you. Our hosts and audiences were great, as usual. But, how else do you explain these other strange phenomena:
1. We got to stay in the same hotel two nights in a row ... and it was a nice hotel.
2. We got a decent night's sleep both nights.
3. After Sunday's out-of-state concert, we drove back and actually got home long before before the sun came up.
We must have hit a wrinkle in time or something in Louisville. There's something strange about that place. Not only did they have the nicest Super 8 we've ever stayed on, they also had the fanciest Taco Bell we've ever seen.
We played in some interesting settings, too:
Friday's concert was in church that had no place at the front for a band to set up, so we literally had to build a stage. Thankfully, the church had all the pieces for a do-it-yourself stage hidden down in the basement. It was pretty amazing how things all came together ... literally.
Saturday's concert was in a big school auditorium on base at Ft. Knox, and there were props from previous plays backstage, so we incorporated a few of them into our show, including two massive pillars, a large potted plant, and a 12 ft. lighted Eiffel Tower. The general of the base even came to the show. We thought the closest we get to that rank would be the Dollar General we stopped at for extension cords on the way to the base.
Sunday's concert was in a converted Ryan's Steakhouse now operating as a Calvary Chapel, with a sign on the front that says "Where the Sheep Like to Eat." Our dressing room was located behind the old kitchen doors.
Thanks to everybody who make this past weekend a success, including the concert coordinators:
Pastor Mark and Sande Shepherd at Jeffersontown United Methodist Church in Louisville; Chaplain Judy Hamrick and her staff at Ft. Knox (and thanks to the General for coming to the show); and to Jimm Derby, the youth pastor at Calvary Chapel in Columbus.
- everybody who helped us manage the merchandise table:
Audra Knatcal (who drove six hours from Missouri) in Louisville and Ft. Knox; Jena, Tessa, and Tyler also in Ft. Knox; and Kelli Frantik (who drove four hours from Pennsylvania), Rebecca, Kaleh, Serenity and Moriah in Columbus.
- and our sound guys:
Dave Barnett in Louisville; the on-base personnel at Ft. Knox; and Larry Davis in Columbus.
Special thanks to Jena, Tessa, Tyler, Chaplain Judy, Kelli, Jacob, and Zack for making sure we had food and drinks at every show.
We're already scheduled to be back in Kentucky and Ohio several times in 2006. Please check our schedule for more details.
