Keith Haynie: The Babe Ruth of Bassists
Sun., Sep. 24. 2006 3:50am EDT

Despite a late-season power surge by San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds, it appears that ApologetiX bassist Keith "Holy Driver" Haynie will be the first to break Hank Aaron's hallowed mark of 755. Much to the chagrin of Giants fans, Keith will do it in the backyard of their hated rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Barring injuries, Hammerin' Haynie will play his record-tying 755th concert with ApologetiX this Friday in Downey CA and his record-breaking 756th Saturday in Westminster CA. He played his first official concert with ApologetiX on October 6, 1995, and will celebrate his 11th anniversary with the band the Friday after next in Shepherdsville KY.

Technically, Keith's first concert with ApologetiX was as a fill-in bassist at a concert in Cranberry Township PA on December 22, 1992. Our previous two official bass players were Jerry Hayostek from 1992-93 and Andy Sparks from 1993-95. Several other musicians filled in for us on bass during our formative years at one time or another, including Al Cramer, Rick Errett, Bob Dinkle, and former Omni bassist Steve Kayner, who also played bass on our "Isn't Wasn't Ain't" CD.

Since becoming a member of ApologetiX, Keith has only missed eight concerts, but it took six guys to fill his shoes, including four in one concert! For the record, the following men all subbed for Keith: Rob Oakes (of Peter's Vision) once in 1996, Scott Gilbert (of Ten point Ten, 121 Mercy Street, and now the Aaron Greer Band) twice in 2001, and John Taylor (not of Duran Duran) five times in 2005 and 2006. John was part of a four-man crew who filled in for Keith at the last-minute during our Elizabethtown PA concert last August when Keith's mother had emergency surgery. The others were Dave Fehr, Durelle Leamann, and Steve Reaggs.
