This Past Weekend in IN & AL
Mon., Feb. 12. 2007 3:53am EST

We played in the presence of Kings this past weekend in Plainfield IN (Friday), Talladega AL (Saturday), and Wetumpka AL (Sunday) -- Pastor Bobby King, who promoted the Plainfield concert, and Mark King, who promoted the Talladega concert.

Our promoter in Wetumpka was Joey Brock, so we narrowly avoided the "Three Kings" tour. Our lead singer J. Jackson felt right at home with the palacial promoters; his youngest-yet-still-older sister, Gayle, is married to a King (Jim King), and has two sons who are both Kings (Alex and Nick).

There was another touch of royalty in our Talladega opening act -- Tennesee's own Al Mahan, who specializes in a vocal style fit for a King (Elvis) and Johnny Cash. We were so impressed by Al that we asked him to come back during our show so we could accompany him on his impressive parody of Johnny Cash's "I've Been Everywhere."

Al prayed with us backstage before the show, and with our eyes closed, we almost thought we were praying with Johnny Cash. Check out Al's songs (and voice) at: http://www.indieheaven.com/view_artist.idh?artist_id=5400&fct=aH (Talladega).

We hope to have Al open for us again. Our opening act for Plainfield has already opened for us a number of times over the years: Joanna Martino, a former American Idol contestant who even made it past the dreaded Simon Cowell and on to Hollywood. A Michigan-native now based out of Nashville, Joanna recently released her first national CD. Her website is http://joannamartino.com/

Special thanks to:

our merchandise coordinators: Marie (Plainfield and Talladega); Anne (Talladega and Wetumpka); Liz (Plainfield); A.J., Todd, and Jennifer (Talladega); and Elaina, Sethanie, and Sharon (Wetumpka). Thanks for the special song list, Sharon!

our roadie: Rich (Plainfield and Talladega)

our opening acts: Joanna Martino http://joannamartino.com (Plainfield) and Al Mahan

Honorable mention to:

Rich and Marie Polick, who came to concerts in both Indiana and Alabama, their eighth and ninth states, spending most of the time helping us behind the scenes. Rich also celebrated his birthday with us in Talladega. He's now been to 49 concerts, which is appropriate, since the transplanted northern California native is a huge San Francisco 49ers fan. Marie, his daughter, has seen 48.

Steve from Louisiana, who brought two carloads of family and friends to see us in Wetumpka. Steve has seen us at about 10 concerts in three states, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. Oddly, though, he's never been to one of our concerts in Louisiana.

Mark, Marilyn, Ben, and Seth Barrett, who drove down from Minneapolis MN to the Wetumpka AL show. On the way, they also spent a week helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina, as they did last year when they saw us in Mississippi and Florida. The Barretts have told us they don't have an exact tally of states and shows, but we'd guess it's over 20 shows in at least 10 states.
