ApologetiX in KY, WI, NM, UT, Australia, New Zeala
Thu., Jun. 19. 2003 11:05pm EDT
J. Jackson, lead singer for ApologetiX (That Christian Parody Band) here.
I'm typing this week's email while flying the friendly skies from San Diego CA to Dallas TX to Pittsburgh PA (Yep, it took two flights to compose this thing!) After our concerts in Camdenton MO last Friday and San Diego last Saturday, the rest of the band went home, but I had my wife, Lisa, and daughters, Janna and Heather, along for the ride, so we stayed three extra days. It's been early to bed, early to rise; no matter how much you try to simplify the explanation, one-year-old baby girls don't understand that when you go from eastern time to pacific, you're supposed to get up three hours later!
Although we discovered that June temperatures in San Diego are actually cooler than those in Pittsburgh (go figure), we still had an awesome time checking out the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the much-too-cold-to-swim beach. As I told the fine people at our concert Saturday night, when I was growing up, the San Diego Padres were my second-favorite baseball team, after the Pittsburgh Pirates. I used to think that's where old superstar baseball players went to die. Not a bad way to go, climate-wise, but the team itself was awful when I was growing up, although they eventually reached the World Series in 1984 and '98, losing both times. This year, the Padres are challenging the Detroit Tigers for the title of worst team in baseball. But my Pirates may still steal that honor away from them.
But enough of my yackin'! We want to send out a special thanks to Kyle Miller at Spirit FM and the whole Crossover staff in Camdenton (We'll be back in Camdenton for the big Spirit FM Storm Radio show event in July) and Todd Sherinian and the rest of the crew at El Cajon Wesleyan Church who did such a splendid job organizing the San Diego concert, including a magnificent set designed by Todd's brother and some amazing pyrotechnics!

1. THIS WEEKEND: VACATION
That's right, I just got done telling you that I turned that last concert into a vacation for my family, and now it's vacation time again ... for the whole band. The funny thing is, I'll be visiting my in-laws this weekend in the Paducah KY area, then coming home to Pittsburgh on Monday and then returning to Paducah in time for a concert on Wednesday. I wasn't the greatest at word-problems in math class, but even I know that Pittsburgh to Paducah to Pittsburgh to Paducah doesn't seem like the shortest distance between two points. Don't ask me to explain, but it'll be fine. I like going to Kentucky and visiting my family down there, so that makes the travel a lot easier. Don't look now, but we'll be back in the Paducah area on July 5 for a concert in wife's hometown of Mayfield KY!
2. NEXT WEDNESDAY: PADUCAH KY
We played this event last year and had a really great time! It's honor to be back! Looking forward to seeing all of our pals (not to mention my in-laws) in Kentucky. But as people from the Paducah area know, that part of Kentucky also comes close to the borders of Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee, so concerts there draw fans from a four-state area!

3. NEXT THURSDAY: MILWAUKEE WI GETS WEIRD AL & APOLOGETIX SAME DAY
You've heard of "Paradise City," by Guns n' Roses. Well, next Wednesday, Milwaukee becomes PARODY City, as there will be concerts by both Weird Al Yankovic and ApologetiX, albeit at different venues. Actually, we originally mistakenly told you our event was at 2 p.m., and we were hoping to catch the Weird Al show at 10 or 11 p.m., but it turns out our show is at 8 p.m., so we'll probably still be playing when the Weird one hits the stage. However, maybe we'll still get to hook up with Al's drummer, Bermuda Schwartz, at some point in the day. We'll see. Ironically, Bermuda originally invited us to Al's show in our home base of Pittsburgh later in the summer, but that day we'll be in Al and Bermuda's home base of California preparing for Spirit West Coast!

4. NEXT SATURDAY: ALBUQUERQUE NM (NOTHING GOES WITH KENTUCKY QUITE LIKE NEW MEXICO)
What is it with this band? This will be the third time in 12 months that we have played in New Mexico, and every single time we've done that, we've also gone to Kentucky! I don't know if you've checked a map lately, but those two states are in no danger of having any border disputes! But let's face it; Kentucky and New Mexico go together like ... um ... the Bible and rock parody music! :) By the way, you're probably assuming my favorite song about Albuquerque is Weird Al's incredible comic opus "Albuquerque," and I have to tell you, that is indeed one of my Albuquerque songs, and one of my favorite Al songs, for that matter. However, I must confess that it places second behind David Cassidy's heartfelt vocals on "Point in the Direction of Albuquerque," from the Partridge Family's debut album, which our bass player Keith recently chastised me for having on my Mac I-Pod.

6. APOLOGETIX IN AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND
For a number of years, we have been receiving quite a bit of airplay and email from Australia, which we think is incredible. I've certainly done my part to support Australia by buying the first two Men at Work albums and a number of videos and DVDS of the Wiggles for my one-year-old daughter, Heather. Furthermore, like you, I've seen my share of Crocodile Hunter episodes :) I do draw the line at Air Supply, however :) Anyway, recently the response to ApologetiX down under has spread to New Zealand, as this exemplified by this email we recently received:
"Hi dude. I am a fan from New Zealand. When are you coming down under. My favourite song is ëI Love Apostle Paul.' It rocks. Keep up the good work." Signed, a full-on New Zealand fan
As I tell all of our Australian and New Zealand fans, pray us down there! It could happen! In the meantime, I have good news regarding the distribution of our CDs in Australia and New Zealand. Our CDs have actually been available in Australia for several years now through the Koorong chain and CMP. However, many fans have still had trouble finding them at their local Koorong, and New Zealand fans have really had a hard time. Well, we recently set up an arrangement with Word Australia, which will greatly increase our distribution in stores throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Furthermore, Word Australia will be doing their part to increase radio awareness and airplay of ApologetiX in Australia and New Zealand. Thanks to all of you who have supported us down there through your prayers, your airplay and your word of mouth! God bless you!
Oh, and here's an email from a DJ in Australia that just came in before I sent this email out:
"As a radio announcer on a commercial radio station I think you guys are great. Play you as our ëfeature' artists everyday."

7. UPCOMING CONCERTS (INCLUDING A NEW ONE IN SALT LAKE CITY UT)
Yep, you heard it right! I just recently heard that we will be playing in Salt Lake City UT in August, and we think that's pretty cool! Utah is the 41st state in which we have booked a concert. The nine remaining states we have to schedule before we can collect all 50 commemorative quarters are Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota and Rhode Island.
This list adds concerts frequently, so stay tuned for more info.

8. BIBLE TIME
I know a lot of our email subscribers have begun reading their Bibles daily after being encouraged to do so by our guitarist/producer, Karl Messner. I just wanted to let you know that he takes great delight in sharing your progress with the rest of us in the band, and we're all very proud of you.
Just so you know, last week I reached "The All Star Break" of the Bible ó the center chapter ó Psalm 118, which conveniently falls between the shortest chapter (Psalm 117) and the longest chapter (Psalm 119) of the Bible. I am now in the book of Proverbs. Like many of you, I have read the entire Bible many times over the years (I try to read it the whole way through at least once a year), but I have to tell you, it never gets old or stale.
It seems like God has new things to show me every time I pick it up and certainly ever time I read it through. Yes, there are some particularly dry parts of the Bible (certain portions of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, 1 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Job and Ezekiel come to mind), but just remember, they're all important (2 Timothy 3:16), and you'll understand them better as time goes by and you read more. And I have to tell you, even those dry parts have gotten much easier and much more interesting for me with each reading. So keep it up, pick it up and soak it up!
Apologetically,
J.
