ApologetiX in NY, OH, PA and Hawaii!
Thu., Sep. 5. 2002 1:02am EDT

J. Jackson, lead singer for ApologetiX (That Christian Parody Band) here.

Hope all is well with you. To be frank (like my dad, whose name is Frank, and is a great guy to emulate), we're kind of hurting physically right now. Last Thursday, shortly before we played our concert at Saddleback Community Church in Orange County, CA, I came down with some sort of illness that gave me a fever and chills, later combined with general exhaustion and aches and pains, gradually moving from my hands and feet to my chest and my back, topped off with a slight case of nausea. Our bass player, Keith, apparently caught the same thing two days later. My wife, Lisa, seems to be coming down with it now, and Karl has told me he felt a tad under the weather today, too, although that may be something unrelated.

I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, so I'll be able to come back and inform the rest of the band what they have :) I seem to have gotten past most of the problems aside from the pains in the chest, which are more aches than acute stabbing pains. I'd worry more about that, except for the fact that Keith got the exact same pains in his chest and back, and Lisa has been having pains in her side.

Miraculously, God enabled us to do all four concerts last weekend, and, as He has done in the past, once I got on stage, He enabled me to just about forget the fact that I'd been sick, and then a half hour or so after the concert, I was back to my miserable self :) Please pray for all of us. Your prayers do accomplish much (James 5:14-16), because we have a busy schedule ahead, as you'll see below:

2. Concerts in Hawaii next week with FFH

2. CONCERTS IN HAWAII NEXT WEEK WITH FFH

ApologetiX will perform a series of concerts in Hawaii next week, most of them with one of Christian music's favorite groups, FFH, who also hail from the state of Pennsylvania, albeit from the other side. FFH is known for such songs as "One of These Days," "Big Fish," "I Want to be Like You," and "When I Praise."

We've never met FFH in person, but a friend ours named Jimmy Moore, who was music buyer for a large national Christian music chain in the South, gave them three of our CDs when they asked him for something new that he thought they'd enjoy. Jimmy shared with me an email they sent him later, telling him they'd enjoyed the CDs. At the time, I had actually just discovered FFH, although my wife was already a big fan.

We're looking forward to meeting all of our Hawaii friends and fans in person. KAIM in Honolulu was one of the first radio stations to start playing ApologetiX, back when Jesus Christ Morningstar first came out!

3. GRACE PERIOD NOT AT YOUR LOCAL STORE YET?

We have received encouraging emails from many of you who have bought our latest CD, "Grace Period," at your local store. Some of you had to drive many miles to get it. Some others have done a lot of driving only to find the store doesn't have the CD yet, and some stores claim to not even know about it. Don't despair.

First of all, you need to know that in many Christian bookstores, not everybody in the store knows about the latest CD titles. I recently went into a well known Christian bookstore in my area and asked them about the new Jars of Clay CD, and the new Newsboys CD, and they didn't know about either one, even though one was due out the following week and the other one was already on their shelves! And those are two of the best known Christian bands around!

When you go to your store, if you can't find our CD, ask if the store has a music buyer or a person who runs that department. That person would know whether they've ordered our CD or not. Every Christian bookstore that doesn't have our CD in stock can order it through their distributors, because we are stocked by all of the national distributors, New Day, Spring Arbor, Riverside, Central South and Anchor. They can also order directly from Wesscott Marketing, who handles our CDs plus all of Billy Graham's videos. Just have them call Wesscott at 800-788-0442. Please note that Wesscott handles store orders only and not sales to individuals.

4. KARL'S KORNER

>From the desk of ApologetiX lead guitarist and producer, Karl Messner:

Hey, thanks for requesting "Smooth Grandmama" from your local Christian Rock Station. In the first week, more stations added that song to their regular rotation than any other song! And now that song is being played on about 1/4 of all the Christian rock stations in the country! But there are a few very important stations that just haven't heard from ApologetiX fans yet.

Well, you have not, because you ask not, so I thought I'd just let you know who they were. If you live reasonably close to one of them, and could, please take a moment to call the station and request "Smooth Grandmama" by ApologetiX. (if you live closer to another station that DOES play it, you might mention that you heard it on that station and would love to hear it on theirs)

AND anytime you do hear an ApologetiX song on the radio, PLEASE call them, and tell them that song rocks and you'd love to hear more ApologetiX on their station.

Ok, this is not a call to bombard these guys, they're our friends, but just a nudge to our best fans to act. Please don't call more than once every other day or so, and please just request it like you would any other song you wanted to hear.

We couldn't care less about being rock stars, but if more people will play THAT song, then it might make the news (charts) and then more folks could become exposed to ApologetiX music as other new stations start to play it. And in the end, more folks would have a great witnessing tool for their unsaved rock-and-roll loving friends, as well as a great teaching aid for themselves.

Our former drummer, Bob Flaherty, told me on the phone the other day that his seminary college makes him take a "Basic Bible Knowledge" test before and after the program. He told me, "Dude, ApologetiX is going to get me through seminary - I was finished 20 minutes before anyone else, and it's all stuff I learned from the songs."

Forget the "Hokey Pokey"... THAT'S what it's ALL about!

Here's the seven stations. Wait a while and call later (let's not all call at once, when this email goes out)

5. GOD SHOWS HIS LOVE FOR IRONY

You know, it's funny. I was writing an email to my niece and goddaughter, Jessica, who just got done doing an internship with MTV, working for the TRL show with Carson Daily ... or you could say with Carson, daily. I started reminiscing and stumbled over something cool:

When I was doing MY college internship, I was a fledgling newspaper reporter (and not a born again Christian), and one Friday I was sent to do a story on this local Christian band called the Watchman (They had just changed their name to Abraham) that toured all over the United States, including Hawaii. First of all, I couldn't believe there was some Christian band that popular that I'd never heard of, and second of all, the last thing I wanted to do was go interview them. I was suspicious of those kind of people, and I knew I'd feel guilty just hanging around them, and I had plans to hit the bars with the gang later that night. I knew they'd be all nice and make me feel guilty without even trying. They did. I couldn't believe they'd been to Hawaii.

As I was typing that, I realized something: That band was based in Clymer PA. We're doing a concert there on Sunday (never played there before), and the next day we leave for Hawaii, the place I couldn't believe they'd been to! Isn't that wild?

I never, ever, ever dreamed I'd be singing in a Christian band one day. God has a great sense of humor. It's funny; that same year, when I was working for the school paper, they made me cover a story on a guy named Josh McDowell, who was talking about the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. I didn't want to go, but I actually enjoyed it, and he was pretty convincing, but it didn't change my lifestyle. This guy, Josh McDowell, supposedly had written 20-30 books, and I wanted to know why I'd never heard of him if he'd been so prolific. Again, God shows His sense of humor. What do you suppose Josh is one of the world's foremost authorities on -- apologetics, the word that we would base our band's name on six years later.
