2. KARL'S KORNER
Hi, Karl Messner, here. Just wanted to tell you about something very cool. There is a company that does "Flash" videos for the web, and wanted to do something with us, and as something of a sales pitch, went ahead and did the first one free. Ok, I have to admit, I thought that telling the story of Jonah, with our song in the background, would be a neat idea, but I wasn't sure they'd have the Pixar quality that we'd hope for.
Boy were WE SURPRISED!
The video absolutely rocks and I couldn't wait for it to be on the net for you to see it. Now you can, and don't forget to play the Jonah game!
Here's the link: http://www.amvcentral.com/
And by the way, this represents a GREAT example of people using ApologetiX to teach, or learn. I had a request to show someone letters from fans who use ApologetiX in a teaching setting or ministry setting. I get a bunch, but I haven't saved them... until now.
If you have a testimonial about ApologetiX being used in a teaching environment or even to help you learn specific things, tell me about them in an email. I've set up a special email address just for this. Send your ApologetiX used in ministry, Sunday School, Home School, discipleship or personal devotion to this address:
teach@apologetix.com
We're headed out on the road Thursday, and I'm looking forward to reading some great stories!
Thanks, Karl (Make sure you check out the Bible verse at the end of this e-mail!)
3. APOLOGETIX IN SCOTLAND!
We got this e-mail the other day from a fan in Scotland!
"Hi guys. Just wanted to know if you would like to add the name of the bookstore that I work in to your list of stores that stock ApologetiX. We have been stocking all the albums since around October last year and they have been selling great. The address for our store is: Wesley Owen Books & Music, 24-28 Bothwell Street, Glasgow G2 6PA, Scotland."
Isn't God great?
4. "THE REAL SIN SAVIOR" #1 IN OKLAHOMA AND INDIANA
Here's the latest from Greg Griffin at KOKF in Oklahoma City, OK:
"'The Real Sin Savior' (from "Keep the Change") has been number one in our POP/CHR report for three weeks in a row. The chart is based on listener response research and number of spins. KOKF reports to R&R and CCM Update."
A little bird tells me we may have some news for you soon about an ApologetiX summer concert in Oklahoma. Stay tuned. Thanks for the update, Greg!
Mike Stankovic at WFHB in Bloomington IN, one of the most well-connected and kindhearted God-loving radio guys I've ever met, says "The Real Sin Savior" also hit number one Heirforce One on WFHB "and the local bookstore couldn't keep it in stock ... very backordered."
Mike and Jammin Jim' Surman do The Sonrise Mix show on Saturday 6-8 a.m., and Mike (alias "Tha Messenger") teams with Deacon Clarence Boone on Heirforce One, where you always hear "Tha tightest beats and tha hardest lyrics" on Sunday from 6-8 a.m.
They'll be helping to promote our show in Martinsville IN February 24. These guys have been great to us! Thanks, Mike, Jim and Clarence!
5. "STAY IN THE LIGHT" HITS TOP 10 IN CHILE
We just received the latest edition of Musica Joven, aired on five stations in Chile and our parody "Stay in the Light" from "Keep the Change" is in the Top 10, along with Out of Eden, U2, P.O.D. and TobyMac. Rebecca St.James and Jaci Vel·squez. Awesome!
6. "BETHLEHEMIAN RHAPSODY" IN YEAR-END TOP 10 IN DENVER
Jay Michaels, the co-host of Denver's Christian rock/alternative show, The Invasion, on 94.7 KRKS-FM in Denver tells us that "Our listeners love you here" and that Bethlehemian Rhapsody was one of the top 10 most-requested songs for 2001. Not bad for a song that came out in October! Other groups on the top 10 included MxPx, Five Iron Frenzy, P.O.D., Extol and Living Sacrifice, so that's quite different company than we kept on that Top 10 chart in Chile!
7. APOLOGETIX IN NOIZE MAGAZINE AND DJ TIMES MAGAZINE
Jeff Stiles from Noize Magazine contacted us this past week with his two cents worth on Keep the Change:
"Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I've got a paragraph on ApologetiX in a story that's published in the current (February) issue of the international music publication DJ Times Magazine, which can be located at any major newsstand (and in a couple weeks will be available online on our site at www.djtimes.com. Plus, there's a review of your last CD in the current online issue of Noize Magazine atwww.thenoize.faithweb.com."
Here's the text of the review: "While on their previous five projects Apologetix proved their were clever, on their newest release this Christian parody band proves they're also good musicians. They do take some liberties (i.e. a keyboard solo on "Old Time Romans Road"?), but overall the songs sound much like the originals with Bible-based lyrics substituted. Everyone from Nine Days to Blink 182 to Limp Bizkit to AC/DC to Lynard Skynard to Queen to the Beatles get covered-19 full songs in all from 18 different artists. "Bethlehem Rhapsody" is the only repeat here from an earlier Apologetix release (this particular parody from the group's 1994 release, Biblical History Tour). The most realistic-sounding parodies would have to be "Stay in the LIght" (Bee Gees) and "The Real Sin Savior" (Eminem). Check out the group's website for complete song listings from each of the group's six releases."
8. CAN IT BE ... APOLOGETIX IN PITTSBURGH?
Hey, Karl here again: We're trying to support Christian music in our hometown of Pittsburgh, which has no music radio station right now, and thus, no Christian music culture to speak of. Pittsburgh is missing out on the blessings that many people have appreciated from the ministries of Christian musicians.
To that end, we've talked the promoters of the concert in Pittsburgh on March 21 (See Upcoming Concerts section below for more details) to lower the presale price to $8 for people on our fan list only. It will stay $10 on the website, and $12 at the door.
For ticket info, email: Chris Girard at tcg233@libcom.com Tell her you're an ApologetiX eFan and she'll know you get the discount!
9. PUPPET SHOW AND APOLOGETIX?
Over the past few years, we have been contacted countless times by puppet ministries who use ApologetiX parodies as part of their shows for children and adults. It is amazing just how many puppet ministries there are in the world and how many of them have honored us by using our CDs to reach others for Christ! Our CDs are even stocked by One Way Street in Colorado, which supplies materials to puppet ministries all over the world. We think that's very cool, and we're humbled by it.
That having been said, we can't help but giggle at the similarity of our career path to that of Britain's legendary heavy metal band Spinal Tap. Not only have we both gone through a lot of drummers over the years (of course, ours are all alive and still friends with us), but Tap played one of their last shows at a theme park where the marquee read "Puppet Show and Spinal Tap." If you've seen the movie, you know that lead singer David St. Hubbins' girlfriend-turned-manager saw the sign and uttered the classic line, "I told them a hundred times it's supposed to be 'Spinal Tap and Puppet Show.'"
In fact, when we were kicking around names for the last CD, Bill and I joked about spoofing Metallica's "Master of Puppets" and calling it "Pastor of Puppets" or "Pastor of Muppets." But now, it seems, we have topped Tap. Are you ready for ApologetiX puppets? Dig this e-mail we recently received:
"Jeannie here from The Shepherds Puppet Ministry - South Africa. I am planning a show like a rock concert show, we will be using all your songs and it will be all black light. I think it will be great. Basically the Apologetix band in puppets. Hope you don't mind a puppet taking your place ... I will see that you get a photo of our Puppet version of the Apologetix band."
I can't wait to see the photos! That is pretty wild!
10. FROM OUR OLD DRUMMER BOB
Bob Flaherty served as ApologetiX drummer from May 1995 till September 1998, including all the drums on our "Ticked" (i.e. "Rolling Clone") CD. His e-mail is rocknbobby@yahoo.com if you ever want to say hello. Bob was an ApologetiX fan and a good friend before he became our drummer, and he remains an ApologetiX fan and good friend. When he moved to South Carolina last year, I lost more than just a friend ó I lost my home repair guy, too (By the way, thanks to our Karl, who came to my rescue yesterday when I broke a light fixture while getting our daughter's new bunk beds set up.)
One of the many cool things about Bob is that he learns the words to our parodies and it helps him to memorize scripture. Here's an e-mail he sent us the other day:
"Hey, I just played Bible trivia with Jill and some friends. He just finished seminary and his wife just finished Bible college. I totally crushed them thanks to ApologetiX. He was so impressed that I knew so much from one band I gave him the Christmas CD and Keep the change. He says he wants to order the others too. Just wanted to say thanks for the free subliminal info. By the way, Karl will be happy to know I answered 2 questions from the lyrics in 'Rock and Roots' - one about Obed, and one about Boaz. I got Obed because the question was 'Who was Ruth's first son?' I knew Ruth was David's great grand mother from 'Naomi Gonna be with Ruth' and I just counted backwards from "Rock and Roots."
Another was the guy who fell asleep while Paul was preaching ... Eudachaes, or however it's spelled (Editor's Note: It's Eutychus, Bob!), from Keith's fav the 'Livin' After Midnight' parody (Editor's Note: This is from an early tape ApologetiX put out in 1992.) I also got a couple from 'La Bible.' See ya, Bob"
