Weird Al & ApX on Parallel Paths This Week

J. Jackson, lead singer and lyricist for ApologetiX here again.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of appearing on the same radio show as “Weird Al” Yankovic … although I doubt he knows that. I did an interview with Tim "Timmy D" DeMoss on WFIL in Philadelphia. Earlier in the show, he interviewed Al, who was promoting his brand single, a new polka medley called “Polkamania!”

Both of us did phone-in interviews, so we never crossed paths. Tim informed me that he did tell Al about our recent parody, “You Can Call…

Our next CD, ApologetiX ’74, has been at the manufacturer for over three weeks and should be in stock later this month. We plan to start taking orders by the end of this weekend.

ApologetiX '74 is our 74th LP and exclusively spoofs Top 10 hits from 1974. We're releasing it in 2024, exactly 50 years later. As ApX lead singer/lyricist J. Jackson explains, "I turned 10 in '74, and it's my favorite year for pop music. It had some of the cheesiest, corniest, greatest hit singles ever. I already had parody ideas…

The Stories Behind the Songs (Dock the Boat / The Point the Lord Returns)

J. Jackson, lead singer and lyricist for ApologetiX here again.

Here are the stories behind the songs on our 14th single of 2024:

DOCK THE BOAT

Some music historians credit "Rock the Boat" as the first disco song to top the Hot 100. Others point to two instrumentals released earlier that year — "Love's Theme" by Love Unlimited Orchestra or "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" by MFSB. I love both of those tunes, too, but "Rock the Boat" ruled the chart in my heart in the summer of '74, as my family vacationed in…

The Stories Behind the Songs on This Single: Ain't Talkin' 'bout Fluff / Smart Blest Man

J. Jackson, lead singer and lyricist for ApologetiX here again. Here are the stories behind the songs on our 13th single of 2024:

AIN’T TALKIN’ ‘BOUT FLUFF

Sometimes, when I'm in the middle of talking about something mundane, I'll lose interest in what I'm saying and wonder how the people to whom I'm speaking could care. I'm not much for small talk, but I realize it can be an important stepping stone to building a rapport with neighbors, co-workers, and others we encounter regularly in our lives. And that…

African YouTuber Reacts to ApologetiX

We received the following message this week from ApologetiX fan and friend Russell Cruzan in San Antonio TX:

"Here is a link to a YouTube channel done by a friend of mine in Nairobi, Kenya. Her name is Faith Obaga but she goes by Fay. She is a Christian and she does reactions to songs on YouTube.

"Over the past year, I have sent her links to several songs by you guys for her to react to, and she is in love with ApologetiX.

"A few weeks ago, I sent her a link to "Scarborough Fair" by Simon and Garfunkel…

The Stories Behind the Songs: Got My Mindset From You / Media Circus

J. Jackson, lead singer and lyricist for ApologetiX here again.

Here are the stories behind the songs on our 12th single of 2024:

GOT MY MINDSET FROM YOU

Remember when Mr. Spock used the "Vulcan mind meld" in Star Trek? Many times I've wished I could do that in order to help other people understand my point of view. However, God has a better way to get us to see things from His perspective, and that's what this parody is about.

I was just minding my own business on December 13, 2023, when the title came to…

Stories Behind the Songs: Dumb Decisions / Good Guys Rule

J. Jackson, lead singer and lyricist for ApologetiX here again.

Here are the stories behind the songs on our 11th single of 2024:

DUMB DECISIONS

I got the title and theme for this parody on December 9, 2022, and was excited at the prospect of singing about King Rehoboam, although I'd venture a guess that many, if not most, Christians don't know who he was.

As the successor to his father, Solomon, he played a pivotal role in the history of Israel. His brashness caused it to split into northern and southern…

The Stories Behind the Songs on This Single

J. Jackson, lead singer and lyricist for ApologetiX here.

Here are the stories behind the songs on our 10th single of 2024:

ALL DEAD AND GONE

ApologetiX has a long history with the Eagles song "Already Gone." From 1992-97, we performed and recorded it as a parody about the Rapture under various titles ("Already Gone," "Already Goin'," "All Ready to Go") with gradually changing lyrics. I was never really satisfied with the results and believed we had taken it to the limit.

However, on July 26, 2019, an idea came to me for something totally different — "All Dead and Gone." I didn't get any other lyrics at the time, but I knew the premise: Throughout history, many notable people have made pronouncements about the meaning or meaningless of life and the afterlife, but only Jesus Christ has come back to prove what He said was true. The rest of them are all dead and gone.

Or to repurpose a quote Keith and I love from the movie Night of the Living Dead, "Yeah, they're dead. They're ... all messed up.”
